A small leak is deceptive because the visible damage — a faint ceiling stain, a slightly damp patch of insulation — almost never matches what’s actually happening above it. Water doesn’t travel straight down. It follows the path of least resistance along rafters and decking, often showing up several feet from where it’s actually entering the roof.
Left unaddressed, that moisture leads to rotted roof decking, damaged insulation, and in humid conditions, mold growth inside wall or ceiling cavities. What would have been a same-day shingle and flashing repair can turn into replacing sections of decking, drywall, and insulation — a much bigger job.
The good news is that most leaks are fixable if they’re caught reasonably early. If you notice any staining, a musty smell in a specific room, or peeling paint near the ceiling line, it’s worth having someone take a look before the next rain. It’s almost always cheaper to check and find nothing than to wait and find out you were wrong.
