Why Gutters Matter More Than Most Homeowners Realize

Gutters get overlooked because they’re not doing anything dramatic — they’re just quietly moving water away from your home, until they stop working and suddenly everything they were protecting is at risk.

When gutters clog or pull away from the roofline, water backs up under the roof edge, which can rot fascia boards and roof decking over time. Overflowing water also runs down the side of the house, which accelerates siding wear and can lead to basement or foundation moisture issues if it’s pooling near the foundation instead of being carried away.

The fix is usually simpler than the damage it prevents: regular cleaning (twice a year is typical, more if you have a lot of overhanging trees), making sure downspouts extend water at least several feet from the foundation, and replacing gutters that have started to sag, rust, or pull away from their fasteners. If you’re already having your roof inspected, it’s worth having the gutters checked at the same time — they’re part of the same water-management system, even though they get treated as an afterthought.
