Window replacement is a big enough investment that it’s worth avoiding a few common, avoidable mistakes.
The first is choosing based on price alone without comparing what’s actually included — frame material, glass package (double vs. triple pane, low-E coatings), and installation quality vary enormously between quotes that might look similar on paper. The cheapest quote is sometimes cutting corners on exactly the details that determine how long the windows perform well.
The second is underestimating installation quality’s role in performance. Even a high-end window, poorly installed with gaps in the flashing or insulation around the frame, will underperform a mid-range window installed correctly. Ask specifically how a contractor handles flashing and insulation around the rough opening, not just which window brand they use.
The third is not thinking about the whole house at once — replacing windows on one side of the house while leaving clearly older windows elsewhere creates a mismatch in both appearance and performance that often ends up needing to be finished later anyway, sometimes at a higher cost than if it had been planned as one project from the start.
