Summer doesn’t bring the dramatic storm damage that spring hail season does, but sustained heat has its own slower, cumulative effect on a roof that’s worth understanding.
Prolonged UV exposure and high attic temperatures accelerate the aging of asphalt shingles, drying out the oils that keep them flexible and causing granule loss over time — this is a normal part of a shingle’s lifecycle, but poor attic ventilation can accelerate it well beyond what the shingle’s rated lifespan assumes. It’s worth checking, during or after a stretch of especially hot weather, whether shingles in south- and west-facing sections (which get the most direct sun) show more wear than the rest of the roof.
Summer is also a reasonable time to address attic ventilation issues if you’ve noticed unusually high cooling bills, since poor ventilation makes your air conditioning work harder against trapped attic heat. And since summer often brings its own share of severe thunderstorms and occasional hail in this region, it’s still worth an inspection after any notably strong storm, even outside of the traditional spring hail season.
